Jackson Elementary students reading books

This has been a year of great change for both our staff and students as we adjusted our schedules to focus on improving all students’ reading skills. While it is still early and we need more testing and data, we are excited about the gains we are already seeing in our students’ reading!

In September we rolled out a new reading curriculum called Success for All which also has a whole-school reform approach that includes cooperative/team student learning, distributed leadership among building staff, and solutions teams that focus on engaging families and removing barriers such as poor attendance or behavior. SFA was implemented in all six MPSD elementary and both of its middle schools. Lincoln and McKinley Academy were not part of that rollout; however, its administrators and staff members are also learning about the program to see what elements can be used for their students, such as cooperative learning.

First Quarter SFA Reading Results
The first quarter SFA curriculum tests results are in, and
District-wide, an average of 6% more students were proficient/reading at grade level placement than at the start of the school year, from 31% to 37%. Aggregate proficiency levels ranged from 21% at Jefferson to 48% at Riverview. See each school's results in the chart below.

Second Quarter SFA Reading Results
Second quarter results are showing continued gains in reading scores. District-wide, an average of 41% of students were proficient/reading at grade level placement, up 10% from the start of the school year. Aggregate proficiency levels ranged from 24% at Jefferson to 52% at Franklin. See each school's results in the chart below.

These are just two data points and it's too early to predict whether these gains will translate into gains on the state's Forward Exam, which feeds DPI's State and District Report Cards. However, this is terrific news to celebrate for MPSD teachers who are working hard every day to improve students' reading and writing.

Thank you to families for supporting this learning at home, whether it is reading with your children or encouraging them to read and complete their homework. 🎉 Keep up the great work! You are making a difference! 📚
